Today marked a significant turning point in my journey towards better mental health and asserting my boundaries. For so long, I’ve been caught up in the needs and demands of others, particularly the endless requests from other parents to help teach their children. It's a noble cause, but it's time I put my own children first.
This afternoon, I took my kids to their first soccer training session at the Juventus Soccer Club in Durban North. The excitement and anticipation in their eyes were contagious, and I couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride as we arrived at the field.
Watching them during the fitness session, running with determination and joy, brought an indescribable sense of elation. The coach’s enthusiasm and skill were evident as she guided them through ball control drills, helping them learn the fundamentals of the game. The whole experience confirmed my decision to say a firm “No” to teaching other students and to dedicate my time and energy to my own children.
Seeing them thrive and engage in an activity that combines physical exercise and teamwork was a powerful reminder of why I needed to make this change. Sports, combined with the music they love, provide a holistic development that nurtures their body, mind, and spirit. The synchronization of movement and rhythm not only promotes full-body coordination but also fosters a sense of discipline and joy.
As I stood there, cheering them on, I felt a deep sense of relief and affirmation. I realized that by prioritizing my own children, I’m not just investing in their futures but also setting a healthier example for myself. Learning to say no has been challenging, but today proved that it is absolutely worth it.
By focusing on my kids’ needs and passions, I’m ensuring they grow up feeling valued and supported. This experience has reinforced my belief that sometimes, the most important lesson we can teach our children is the importance of setting boundaries and taking care of our own well-being.
Here’s to many more soccer sessions, music lessons, and moments of joy and growth. And here’s to the strength to keep saying no when needed, for the sake of my mental health and my children’s happiness.
Until next time,
